Residents at the zoo include exotic animals that are not found in the Icelandic wild. In 2008 the zoo was permitted by the Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority to import various reptiles, including iguana\u00b4s, bearded dragons and snakes. The reptiles were imported and formally exhibited in 2011. The goal of the exhibit was to show the evolution of animals from fish to frogs and reptiles, and how the changes have taken place. About twenty animal species can be found in the zoo.
