<\/p>\nOn the 25th and 26th of September, zoo staff visited farmers at Heydals\u00e1 in Strandir and H\u00e1afell in Hv\u00edt\u00e1rs\u00ed\u00f0a. The reason for this trip was to pick up new sheep and goats for the zoo.<\/p>\n
The first stop was at H\u00e1afell, where goats have been bred since 1989. J\u00f3hanna B. \u00deorvaldsd\u00f3ttir and \u00deorbj\u00f6rn Oddsson cared for a mixed species farm until 2005, thereafter they only kept and bred goats. The farmers at H\u00e1afell have put a lot of work into developing and advertising goat produce as well as the use of all materials. The Icelandic goat population has been endangered for many years and is in need of protection. When it comes to breeding, farmers have emphasized on bringing diversity into the stock. The public’s interest in goat produce has increased in recent years as it is of high quality and has many health benefits. In 2012 the Goatfarm at H\u00e1afell opened, where guests can visit their goats, learn about them and the produce they make. \nThree beautiful female kids came back to the zoo from H\u00e1afell and they have been welcomed into our small herd. J\u00f3hanna had already named two of them and they will keep those names, \u00c1rs\u00f3l is of the color “golsuflekk\u00f3tt” and Hulda is “gr\u00e1flekk\u00f3tt”. Lastly, Krist\u00edn is of the rare color “antil\u00f3pubaug\u00f3tt, the color does not have a formal Icelandic name yet and has previously been dormant for many years.<\/p>\n
The next day a trip was taken to Strandir, where the farmers Ragnar Kristinn Bragason and Sigr\u00ed\u00f0ur Gu\u00f0bj\u00f6rg J\u00f3nsd\u00f3ttir at Heydals\u00e1 welcomed our staff members. They own a large and impressive sheep farm. They have many sheep that are diverse in color and the cleanliness of the barn was exemplary. Staff chose three young ewes at Heydals\u00e1 farm. A black one named Surtla, a white one named Mj\u00f6ll and rust brown one with a white marking on her head (m\u00f3rau\u00f0 kr\u00fan\u00f3tt) named Kr\u00fana. They have also been welcomed into our small herd here at the zoo.<\/p>\n
Our sheep and goats will be outside during most of the day as long as weather conditions are still good and enough grass is available for them to graze.<\/p>\n
