The Reykjavik Park and Zoo switches gears on May 31st when the summer season officially begins, extending opening hours and making all rides and attractions available every day. The opening hours will be from 10 AM to 6 PM daily. Spare parts for the drop tower ride arrived this week, and maintenance is expected to be completed before the end of June. The ride will therefore remain closed in the meantime.
This year’s summer season kicks off with fanfare and marching bands as the Reykjavík School Bands’ (Skólahljómsveit Reykjavíkur) harvest festival will be held in the park starting at 1 PM and continuing throughout the day on May 31st.
The daily animal schedule will change slightly, and a new program feature called “environmental enrichment” will be introduced every day throughout the summer. At 2 PM each day, staff from the animal and education departments will demonstrate and explain environmental enrichment for the animals. These enrichment activities vary but are designed to enhance the animals’ environment while also making it easier and safer for staff to interact with them when needed. This can be important when a veterinarian or zookeeper needs to examine an animal thoroughly or administer medicine or supplements. The featured animals will vary from day to day.
