Over the years, many different animals have come to Reykjavik Park & Zoo in need of help after getting into trouble in the capital area. Reykjavik Animal Service has now taken over that role and receives animals in need. The city of Reykjavik operates the Animal Service in Reykjavik Park & Zoo, as the municipality is obliged to help wild animals in need within its boundaries. The care that animals need can range from helping them back into a better habitat to necessary veterinary care. People that witness an animal in need in Reykjavik can contact Reykjavik Animal Service by calling 822-7820.
The majority of animals in need of help are birds and they often come here alone or in large groups after incidents like oil spills. A few wild mammals have also come to the zoo in need and the most exotic one was a bat. It came to the zoo in July 2011. The bat was found in bad shape on board a ship in Reykjavik harbor. Zoo staff tried to help it but sadly it did not survive. Naturally, precautions were made when it was being handled.
The small bat is not the only bat to be been seen in Reykjavik Park & Zoo, as gardening staff planted a flower bed forming a large bat within the park in 2012. One of the many beautiful flower beds that the city planted for people to enjoy.
