The mares Fifa (palomino), Freyja (black with a star) and Kengala (black) are currently staying at the zoo. They will be visiting this fall season while the zoo´s horses take a vacation, grazing in pasture. They receive a similar amount of vacation time as the zoos staff are given during the summer.
The visitors first days at the zoo were spent inspecting the cloven-hoofed inhabitants (especially the cattle). As they are not accustomed to seeing cattle up-close, though they are worldly, fully grown mares.
An interesting fact is the name Kengala comes from the Icelandic Grettir´s Saga. Asmundur Grettir´s father had a mare bearing that name and she was especially weather-wise and resisted taking part in foolish expeditions. Freyja on the other hand, is the name of a goddess in Norse mythology associated with love and fertility. Fifa is the Icelandic name for cotton grass, often used for palomino horses in Iceland.
