The Icelandic reindeer are descendants of deer that came to Iceland from Northern Scandinavia. They came with settlers and have lived in the wild ever since. Reindeer have hairs that are hollow on the inside and isolate quite well. They can withstand up to -40°C in the best conditions. They are the only type of deer where both male and female animals have horns. Although about 4% of the population are born without them. The reindeer lose their horns each year, the males when the mating season is over in the fall and the females after they give birth in the spring. New horns start to grow immediately after they lose the old ones.
