Lambing began this morning (May 10) when the ewe Dokka delivered the lamb king and lamb queen. It is the first lambs on each farm to receive these royal titles. The father is the ram Jökull who, just like the staff of the park, is waiting for more lambs that are expected in the coming days.
Being a mother suits Dokka well, but she now stays in a designated area in the sheep pen while she forms a good and strong bond with the two lambs.
As soon as a ewe has given birth to her lamb or lambs, she begins to care for the offspring. That means she licks off their mucus and blood and puts her scent on the lambs. The ewe then recognizes its lambs by smell. A lamb weighs 3-4 kg when it comes into the world, or as heavy as a newborn baby.
As always, we ask visitors to show the offspring as well as other residents of the park the utmost consideration.
