The first goat kid at Reykjavik Park & Zoo this year was born this morning. Our doe Kolbrá was the first to give birth to a handsome buck and a few hours later the doe Síða gave birth to a beautiful young doe. Their father is our buck, Emil. People are welcome to come visit these cute little kids during our opening hours everyday from 10:00-17:00.
Goats are among the first species to be domesticated and it is thought that they have accompanied men for 10.000 years. Their milk, wool, meat and skins has been used throughout the world. Goats are one of the farm animals that settlers brought with them to Iceland and have been called the poor man’s cow since their cheaper to own, don’t take up as much space and provide milk. The Icelandic goat population has never been very large and in 2021 there were around 1.672 goats in Iceland.
